At the recent meeting we had at General Electric Industrial Systems,
CEO Lloyd Trotter informed our group that is not easy becoming a
GEIS supplier because of what they call at GE, "cost out." Cost
out is the GE way of systematically identifying better less costly
ways of making goods and services through quality improvement. Make
no mistake about it corporations around the country are acting in
similar ways. I know that the relentless search for improved financial
results is potentially threatening to MBEs. I however find comfort
in the historical fact that when minorities have been provided opportunities
in the military, government, academia, sports, entertainment, and
corporate management (Lloyd Trotter, an African-American is an excellent
case in point) we have exceeded everybody's expectations but our
own, because we knew deep down, we could do it. So yes it will be
tougher making the cut, but I am confident that the MBE will be there
supplying services to
corporations like GEIS, through it all. Remember, Jackie Robinson!

be it
a spouse, a parent, a boss, or a religious or philosophical
giant.
Lately, I too have been hearing voices, but from none of the
above. I hear the voices of comedian Chris Rock and jazz innovator
Fats Waller. Let me try to explain before you call the medical authorities

for elected officials in the State of Connecticut. The democratic
mayor of the largest city in the state was recently convicted of
numerous felonies all related to his using his office to steer city
contracts to his friends and supporters in exchange for wine, clothes,
and cash. In the words of Mr. Rock, "That ain't right."
